1% better every day

The title of this blog post comes from James Altucher, but growth mindset has been a buzzword for as long as I can remember, as popularized by Carol Dweck.

In doing some research for careers I might be interested in and invest significant time into, I came across the following quote which compelled me in the right direction:

If you don’t find space to grow, you will have to prepare yourself to give up your dreams and your desire of achieving what you want.

-Giada Graziano, Glam Observer

My greatest obstacle right now is finding activities and people in the day that I look forward to more than sleeping in. Sure, for about two years, side effects made me too groggy to be productive. But with new treatment, it’s only my pride and my psyche I have to reconcile. I can get up earlier, with the help of alarms and the expectation of meaningful work.

As it relates: by popular demand, I am restarting an online journal with a friend of mine. The only difference is that now, instead of documenting the day as it passes, we will focus on one improvement daily. Whether that is learning new phrases in fashion-forward languages, or finding new contacts with similar interests; developing movement literacy, or attending events to stay cutting-edge in dance styles as a teacher.

The best part is that I don’t have to specialize necessarily. My friend Ashay sent me a cute comic that blew my mind last year:

The gist of the comic is that you should have enough raw minutes in your lifetime to become a master of SEVEN different fields.

To me, this eliminates the idea of sacrificing a broader array of interests to become good at something.

Figure skating, breaking, ballroom… all contribute to the useful skill of acquiring new flavors of movements.

Fashion, food, animation… I can dabble in each without the pressure of a career.

All I can do is put one foot forward at a time. And when I look back, I believe all the weird, niche, quirky information I have absorbed will propel me into the next stratosphere.
